Abstract:

Contains the personal papers of Genny Schumacher Smith documenting the trans-Sierra-road controversy in the Mammoth Pass-Minaret Summit area and the subsequent establishment of the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Collection includes correspondence with Norman B. "Ike" Livermore, Jr., Raymond "Ray" Sherwin, W. Erv "Chip" Van Nattan, Ronald Reagan, Sierra Club, San Joaquin Wilderness Association, UC Davis-ACT (Active Conservation Tactics), Wilderness Society, Bureau of Public Roads and FHWA, Calif. Dept. of Transportation, as well as other state and federal agencies. Collection also includes memoranda, congressional reports, survey reports, hearings, resolutions, essays, newsletters, articles, maps, pamphlets, and notes. Included is Smith's summary of the collection and controversy.
